There are four types of common wasps in our market:  Cicada Killers, Mud Daubers, Paper Wasps, and Yellow Jackets. Let us take a look at what each looks like:

Cicada Killers - They look like a giant hornet or huge yellow-jacket and are somewhat aggressive. However, the cicada killer is a solitary wasp, not a social wasp, and as such is not likely to sting unless directly handled. Most of the wasps seen are males that patrol the nesting area.
‍Mud Daubers - Mud daubers are usually black, but they may have pale markings or a blue metallic luster. The mud dauber has a “thread-waisted” body, meaning there is a long, slender segment between the thorax and abdomen. Mud daubers also possess clear or dark wings.
‍Paper Wasps - Paper wasps generally have a similar body shape to yellow jackets, but somewhat slimmer with a thin “waist,” with six long legs and an almost triangular side view, as well as two wings and antennae. They are mostly brown with some yellow coloration.
Yellow Jackets - The yellow jacket is a bee-sized, black insect with distinct yellow markings on the head and yellow bands around the abdomen. The face is mostly yellow with dark eyes. Yellow jackets have large antennae and fold their wings lengthwise when not in motion.
