There are three types of bees in our market:  Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees and Honey Bees.  Each is different in their own way.  Let us take a look at what each looks like: 

Carpenter bees - Shiny, black abdomens; may have a yellow, white, brown, or black thorax; 1/2 inch to 1 inch in length
Bumble bees - Fuzzy thoraxes, heads, and abdomens; singular yellow band around their thoraxes; yellow and black abdomens; 3/4 inch to 1+1/2 inches in length
Honeybees -  Fuzzy and light brown in color; yellow and black bands around their abdomens; 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length

The male carpenter bee does not have a stinger. Males are the bees you see hovering around your porch because they are tasked with protecting the nest from other flying insects. Female bees have stingers, but they are not aggressive. They only sting if provoked by touching or handling.

Carpenter bees are very active in early spring through the summer around houses and other wooden structures.  Carpenter bees are often found around wood porches, wood decks, wood playground sets, and other wooden structures.  Carpenter bees get their name because they bore perfect ½” holes in the wood.  The best way to get rid of carpenter bees is to have a quarterly pest control plan on your property so that a professional pest exterminator can treat immediately when activity starts in the spring.  “Dusting” is a highly effective carpenter be treatment whereas a carpenter bee exterminator will dust the wood areas where the activity is which will kill the carpenter bees and stop their boring in the wood very quickly.  Be sure to call a professional quickly before you have tons of holes in your wood structures!

Bumble bees are larger than honeybees, and hairier than wasps. Only bumblebee workers and queens have a stinger, as is the case with honeybees and wasps. Males cannot sting. The stinger is a weapon for defense and only used when they feel threatened.

Bumble bees do not make nests like a hornet or wasp and typically nest in pre-existing cavities on the landscape like rock piles, empty mouse burrows, and under layers of dense vegetation.  Additionally, bumble bees are pollinators, are typically not a threat to you or your home because they don’t have nests or hives that are on your property.  In summary, they are highly beneficial to the environment and typically don’t require any pest control measure unless there is a health concern, which is rare.

A honey bee is able to sting a person or predator using its stinger. Honey bee stings are quite painful and even life threatening to a small percentage of people who are allergic to the venom. Honey bees usually sting as a form of defense of themselves or their colony. When a honey bee stings, it dies a gruesome death. The bee's stinger is structured in such a way that once it punctures human skin, the bee can't yank it out without self-amputating.

Honey bees are protected pollinators and cannot be treated, it is illegal.  If honey bees are a concern on a property, honey bee removal is the only way to safely remove and relocate these important species.
